Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me.

Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang.

The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

.. to validate your novel!

That's right, Validation is now live! To get to the validation page, you can hover over the 'My NaNoWriMo link across the top of the page and select Validate, or you can go to your novel editing page and you should see the validation link in big blue letters!

In order to win, you MUST run your novel through the validator. Otherwise your bar will remain blue and you wont count as an official winner.

I would advise everyone to try and validate early for two reasons:
1) There are ALWAYS discrepancies between Writing programs and the Validatos, so if Word thinks you have reached 50k, the validator may not agree.
2) Lots of people will be validating and sometimes this can lead to the website crashing. Do it early to make sure you can access the website!

Yeah, I've found that between Word and Google Docs, there's about a 200 word difference in how they count the words, and NaNo agrees with Google Docs, giving me 200 more words than I thought I had! I think I'm gonna go with that haha.

I think the discrepancy is in hyphenated words. I reckon that the program I used to write the text, Scrivener, counts hyphenated words as two words and the official validator does not. As it was, when I tried to validate, I was only 200 words down. So it all came out alright in the wash
