The Red RoomThe odour of public urinal was so pungent it was like stepping into a physical barrier. Opting to breathe through my mouth rather than my nose only convinced me I could taste the feculence at the back of my throat. The thought would have made a lesser person gip, well, even more than I was.

The cubicles that lined the walls were pine green against dank red walls, Christmassy. Well it would have been if the spirit of Christmastide had just crawled forth from the Bog of Eternal Stench. Labyrinth, great film, Muppets and Bowie tunes. I directed all thoughts at the smell 'You have no power over me'. It was worth a shot.

Trip set the quill down. He blinked and stood up, rubbing his eyes against the lanternlight. The page on the table, the most recent in a stack that was growing daily, was covered in his neat handwriting, but as he picked it up to check the spelling his eyes started to water.
Ahnia came to stand next to him and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Are you well, young man?"
"Just… tired." Trip shook his head and put the paper back down. "I'll be fine."

I am Joseph, and I live between two dark stone walls. My home is an echoing place. It is a cavernous place, and to keep warm I have to huddle at the end, where the raised platform for the altar is somewhat warmer, being made of wood, not stone. My bed is a nest of sorts. It is a scavenged heap of scraps of cloth and layers of dried grass. I dare not light a fire – besides, there is no chimney in a church. No fireplace to hold petty kindlings. The only things that are supposed to rise from here are the prayers of the meek and the needy. Perhaps I'm both meek and needy, but I don't pray to that god. Who does, now? EpochIsrael's hands throbbed, her palms dotted with pinpricks of blood from the barbed wire fencing. She clutched them tightly to her narrow form, the pressure alleviating her discomfort. She had the vision of a cat and was able to forge her way through the dark and rugged countryside, a lone and insignificant figure against an overwhelmingly vast backdrop.

It was his hand, frozen into a claw; I hooked one of the fingers onto my belt and peered in. It was surprisingly well-lit and I had a marvellous view of the seat of his red dungarees. There was a sudden burst of light and the actinic smell of laser cutting wafted out towards me as James began to cut.

It's been ten days now without sighting of Gen1US. I write this journal entry while crouched in a sewage drainpipe just large enough to admit me, my backpack and a couple of rats. One of my snares is set up around the corner in the hope that, tonight at least, I'll catch dinner.
The wound I sustained five days ago is beginning to fester, I fear. It's warm to the touch and gives slightly when I push against my ankle. It's affecting my movement, no doubt about it, and, most worryingly, it doesn't hurt any more. I'm hoping I can still reach the supply bunker near Stanchion 8, but it's going to be tight.

Being a WriterOn Why Being a Writer is Neither Glamorous nor Exciting

If you watch the blogs and various sites around the internet about writing, you've probably seen at least one list that details a few universal truths about writers, but they all pretty much boil down to several actual truths.

All writers write.
All writers procrastinate.
Writers don't actually write, because we spend all our time doing something else.

This probably explains why, in the dark hours of one of the very last days of NaNoWriMo, I'm sitting here writing this, when my NaNo is sitting in another window with a pathetic 31.8k words.

ALSO: When you submit your novel, it is reviewed by Createspace, so make sure you allow time for this. It may not get accepted straight away and you may need to redo a few bits.
